Third international symposium devoted to Fabergé took place in St. Petersburg

The third international symposium devoted to Fabergé — "The World of Fabergé in St. Petersburg: a glance across the century" — took place in St. Petersburg on 2-3 October, 2014. For two days, museum professionals, curators, and art historians from around the world discussed topical issues related to the preservation of the creative legacy of Carl Gustav Fabergé. The venue for the event was the Fabergé Museum, the opening of which took place on November 19, 2013.

This is the first time in the history of the symposium that it was held in Russia: the two previous events took place in the U.S. in 2011 and 2013, at the Art Museum (Richmond, Virginia) and the Museum of Natural Sciences (Houston, Texas) respectively. Researchers of the famous St. Petersburg jeweler's work, representatives of auction houses from different countries, and prominent collectors attended these events. The proposal by Russian participants for the conference to be held in St. Petersburg in 2013 was met positively, especially since its theme is closely connected with the history and art of Russia.

The manager of the Link of Times cultural and historical foundation branch in St. Petersburg (the founder of the Fabergé Museum) Mikhail Ovchinnikov is sure, "The main feature of the symposium this year is that we have managed to unite Russian and foreign professional societies: the event was attended by representatives from Russia, the USA, the UK, Germany, Holland, and Finland. Foreign experts learned that  many unknown masterpieces of jewelry and crafts are kept in Russia, and representatives of Russian institutions received more detailed information about what they had stored." Mikhail Ovchinnikov considers the beginning of a dialogue between Russian and foreign specialists to be main result of the third international symposium.

During the symposium's two-day program, presentations were made by members of the Advisory Council of the Fabergé Museum in the white-columned hall of the Shuvalovsky Palace: Geza von Habsburg (USA), Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm (Finland), Kiran McCarthy (UK), Marina Lopato and Valentin Skurlov (Russia) and Christel McCanless (USA), Alexander von Solodkoff (Germany), Rifat Garifullin (Russia), and others. The organizers of the symposium are: The Fabergé Research Newsletter (USA), Fabergé Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia), international women's organization "Soroptimist International", and club "Neva" (St. Petersburg, Russia). The organizers express their gratitude to the sponsors: Panasonic and Smolensk Diamonds.
